What Color is Brake Fluid?
Most St Louis drivers know what brake fluid is, but not everyone knows what brake fluid looks like. What color is brake fluid and what should you look for when checking your fluid levels? Initially, your brake fluid should be a clear liquid with just a hint of yellow. But over time, the color and viscosity will change dramatically – which is when you should book an appointment with your friendly neighborhood technicians at Suntrup Nissan!
Why Do I Need Brake Fluid?
Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that keeps your Nissan braking system working smoothly. Not only does your brake fluid assist with the movement of the pedal, but it also lubricates the entire system to help prevent corrosion. If your levels fall low or your fluid becomes contaminated, you put your performance and safety at risk – so it’s crucial to keep an eye on it!
How Do I Check My Brake Fluid?
While most Jefferson County driver prefer to leave the heavy lifting to the experts, checking your brake fluid by yourself is just as simple as checking your oil. When you check your brake fluid regularly, you’ll be able to tell what’s normal and what’s not. That means you won’t be surprised by sudden malfunctions and costly repairs. Here are the basic steps to check your own brake fluid at home:
- Pop the hood and look for the master cylinder to find your brake fluid reservoir. If you need help, your vehicle owner’s manual will have everything that you need.
- Look at the minimum and maximum lines on your fluid reservoir and make sure that your fluid falls in between. If it is under the minimum, it’s time for a top-off.
- Check the color of your brake fluid. If it’s dark or oily, it’s time for a flush and replacement.
