How Often Should You Change Your Oil?
Diligent St Louis drivers know that regular oil changes are essential to keeping your vehicle running like new. In years past, the average recommended interval was every 3,000 miles. These days, though, many vehicles can easily go 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil change services. With that said, it’s always smart to consult your owner’s manual for a specific number. Learn more about the factors that can influence oil change frequency below.
Oil Change Frequency Guidelines
Do you often test your vehicle’s limits with the following activities?
- Racing
- Commercial use
- Off-roading
- Heavy towing
If you haven’t had an oil change in a while, you’ll want to get in touch with our service center near Jefferson County to determine if it’s overdue. 7,500 to 10,000 miles is a great rule of thumb to follow, but if you often put your vehicle through the conditions listed above, you may need the service more often.
Additional Oil Change Tips
- With each oil change, an oil filter replacement should always be done. If you’re changing your oil at home, you can find the right filter for your vehicle at our parts department.
- Even if your car sits in the garage for half the year, an oil change should still be done at least twice yearly. Oil can break down with time, even if your vehicle isn’t used much.
- Be sure to check your owner’s manual if you’re unsure whether your model requires synthetic or conventional oil. Synthetic sometimes costs more, but certain vehicles do require it.
If these tips have sparked any questions you’d like to ask, feel free to give us a call at 314-487-4004 during service hours and an expert from our service team will be more than happy to help.
How Often Should I Check My Oil Level?
Beyond regularly scheduled oil changes, there are things you can do on a monthly basis to keep your new or used vehicle in tip-top shape.
- Check your oil level at least once a month, as this will alert you to oil consumption or oil leaks.
- You’ll also want to keep an eye out for any discoloration or metal particles floating around, as both instances can be signs of a more serious problem.
- If your oil level is looking low or you notice another issue, simply schedule an appointment with the experts here at Suntrup Nissan.
